A family member upgraded their TV only to discover the new TV only has optical output. That's a serious problem as they rely on a 3.5mm wireless TV headphone to compensate for their hearing difficulties.
ESYNIC DAC to the rescue.
Converting optical audio (sometimes called Toslink) to 3.5mm audio meant my family member could continue using their wireless TV headphones without having to learn any new technology. I use a spare TV USB port (which all newer TVs have) to power the DAC, so it automatically switches on/off with the TV. Perfect.
Some other DACs have a volume control, but I think that detracts from the "install and forget" approach as volume can be controlled from the source, or in this case, the headphones, so an extra knob is just a control that's not needed and could be set wrong. Not saying that a volume control is wrong, just suggesting that not having one could be considered a "simplicity" benefit.
In short, I plugged it in and it "just works". No one even knows it's there. Audio quality seems fine for the TV headphones tho I can't speak to audiophile demands.
The metal casing seems solid, the included Optical and USB cables are exactly what I needed for my application, so at a tad more then twenty bucks I'm a happy camper.
It's a new purchase so I can't speak to longevity yet, but I'll update the review if that becomes an issue.
