Grace Tame, the Australian of the Year for 2021, was obviously uneasy when she met with Prime Minister Scott Morrison ahead of a celebration at his residence.
2021 Australian of the Year was in Canberra for a morning tea held by the Prime Minister's Residence for the finalists of this year's award.
Senator McGrath said he was wary of Ms. Tame's "partisan" comments after photographs of her uncomfortable meeting with the Prime Minister at his home in Canberra today with his wife, Jenny, surfaced”.
Senator McGrath said Ms. Tame should "give back the honor" if she didn't like the post after months of public criticism of the Prime Minister.
'We have to continue to address the significant problems identified by last year's Australian of the Year,' he said.
The awkward and tense moment came after Ms. Tame had consistently used her platform to criticize the Morrison government and Australian society in the previous year.
Ms. Tame was stoic as she stood there watching Mr. Morrison and his wife Jenny pose for photos with other people before approaching them with her fiancé Max Heerey.
Ms. Tame was selected the Australian of the Year for 2021 for overcoming a Tasmanian law that barred her from speaking about her sexual assault experiences when she was just 15 years old.
“He was 58 and he was my instructor. He groomed me for months and then abused me virtually every day." In my uniform, on the floor, before and after school.
Labor leader Anthony Albanese acknowledged her major role in starting a national discourse just hours after her chilly moment with the Prime Minister.
"I'd want to congratulate Grace Tame for her amazing courage and strong campaigning on her final day as Australian of the Year," he added.
"You’re the inspiration of the Australian generation and have earned a lot of respect."
Ms. Tame provided some parting words of wisdom on Twitter last week, ahead of the announcement of the 2022 Australian of the Year on Tuesday.
"I've regained everything this year has cost me, and more," she wrote.
